SYDNEY — The yearlong commemoration of the 400th anniversary of the baptism of Grand Chief Membertou begins New Year’s Day with a community feast in Membertou at St. Ann’s Church, beginning at 3 p.m.
Mi’kmaq elder Peter Christmas Sr. said the feast is a tradition that was started by his late father Ben Christmas, the first chief of Membertou.
“Maw-mijisultimk, that’s a gathering of people to have a feast,” said Christmas, adding its purpose was to “join in the sort of forgiveness of animosity.”
